Finding Inspiration in Every Journey: A Photographer’s Approach.
No matter where you are in the world, countless locations are always waiting to be explored, many of which you may not have visited yet or haven’t seen in quite some time. As photographers and content creators, we often seek fresh inspiration, but sometimes, that creative spark can be found in the most familiar places when viewed from a new perspective.
Returning to a place you’ve visited before can be just as exciting as discovering a new one. The lighting conditions, the atmosphere, and even your mindset can transform how you see a place. A once-overlooked alleyway, a hidden café, or how people interact with their surroundings can become a source of compelling images.
In just a few days, I’ll embark on a week-long journey to the vibrant cities of Manila and Cebu in the Philippines. I’ve already mapped out an exciting itinerary for my adventures. But while I have planned some key shoots, I know flexibility is essential because things don’t always go according to plan in travel and photography.
I’ve lined up a couple of photo and video shoots for this trip, including one at a stunning beach resort with crystal-clear waters and pristine white sand. I’ll also work on a fashion shoot, capturing local designs and trends in dynamic cityscapes. However, if there’s one thing experience has taught me, it’s that plans can change in an instant.
Models may cancel, weather may shift, or technical issues may arise. That’s why it’s crucial to remain adaptable. Instead of letting setbacks ruin the experience, I see them as opportunities. When a scheduled shoot doesn’t work out, I shift my focus to the local culture and environment—because a new destination is never short on inspiration.
If your plans fall through, take it as an opportunity to dive deeper into the local scene:
Visit museums and historical sites – These offer a look into the city’s past and rich storytelling opportunities for your photos and videos.
Relax in a charming café – Sometimes, inspiration strikes when you least expect it. Observing daily life in a cozy spot can lead to spontaneous and intimate captures.
Attend local festivals, concerts, or markets – Events like these are bursting with energy, color, and cultural significance, making them excellent subjects for travel photography and vlogging.
Are you someone who enjoys wandering bustling streets at night or prefers the solitude of a quiet seaside town? Knowing your preferences helps you craft a unique visual story that reflects your personality and artistic style.
Some of my most memorable images have come from unexpected moments—a golden sunset spilling over a quiet street, a street musician lost in their performance, or a chance encounter with a local artisan. When I explore, I don’t just look for grand scenes; I observe the small details that make a place unique.
Watching other travel vlogs and photography documentaries is one of my favorite ways to find inspiration before a trip. Seeing how others capture a place gives me fresh ideas and a renewed perspective on how I can approach my storytelling.
Remember to explore the city’s nightlife and evening scenes as the day winds down. Parks, waterfronts, and open plazas often come alive with local energy at night. People gather, street performers take the stage, and the city takes on a different character. Golden Hour and Blue Hour provide some of the best lighting for dramatic and atmospheric shots—perfect for capturing cityscapes, street life, and candid moments.
Finally, make the most of every journey. Every trip, whether planned down to the last detail or full of unexpected detours, is a chance to grow as a photographer and storyteller. Even when things don’t go as planned, embracing the spontaneity of travel often leads to the most authentic and compelling images.
So, wherever you find yourself next, remember to explore with curiosity, stay flexible, and let inspiration find you in both the grand and the ordinary. Your best shot might be waiting just around the corner.
